eReference Collections at Ohrstrom Library

Collection Contents:

Ohrstrom Library has one large collection dedicated to digitized reference books.

Searching within the eReference collection allows a researcher to search the entire contents of all the texts within a given collection.


  • Gale Virtual Reference Library: A collection of hundreds of digitized reference titles including long-standing reference classics such as: The Encyclopedia of Religion, The Encyclopedia of Bioethics, The Encyclopedia of Philosophy, The Encyclopedia of Modern Asia, and Grzimek’s Animal Life Encyclopedia.

    • Embedded within the GVRL is the long-standing Scribner Writers Series. This series of volumes contain biographical and historical context essays for over 1,400 authors. Also included in GVRL is the Twayne’s Authors Series which contains literary and historical analysis of 100+ works.

  • Biography in Context : Over 435,000 biographies compiled from digitized reference sets.

  • Britannica Online : Online version of the Encyclopedia Britannica.

  • Contemporary Literature Criticism: This 324 volume set includes literary criticism and biographical entries for 3,000+ contemporary authors

  • CQ Researcher: Analytical reports from 1923 (U.S. Topics with some contemporary global coverage) to the present. Reports are written by journalists and focus on current domestic and international issues of public concern including: economics, politics, technology, health and the environment.

  • Dictionary of Literary Biography: This 410 volume set includes 14,600+ biographies of a wide variety of writers.

  • Ebsco Discovery Service: Search the majority of the library’s digital collections with one box, one click.

  • Ministry Matters: A collection of digitized Christian religious texts in support of religious researchers and practitioners. The collection includes: Bible commentaries, dictionaries, translations and The New Interpreter’s Dictionary of the Bible.

  • Oxford Art Online: Online version of The Grove Dictionary of Art and The Oxford Companion to Western Art, The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms and The Encyclopedia of Aesthetics.

  • Oxford Biblical Studies: A collection of digitized religious reference works including: six translations, 2 concordances, and several Oxford Commentaries.

  • Oxford English Dictionary: Full online version of the accepted authority on the evolution of the English language.

  • Oxford Islamic Studies: Islamic studies Contains key English language articles from Islam-focused reference sets, including: Oxford Encyclopedia of the Islamic World, The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World, The Islamic World: Past and Present, and The Oxford Dictionary of Islam. Also includes translations of the Qur’an as well as Hanna Kassis’ Concordance of the Qur’an. A timeline of Islamic events and a date converter for Christian and Islamic calendars are incorporated.

  • Oxford Music Online: Online version of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, The Oxford Dictionary of Music and The Oxford Companion to Music. Also includes archived content from The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz.

  • Salem eReference: Access the SPS eBook collection of Salem Reference titles in the fields of literature, history, science and health.
