| Mid-Year
Graduation 1944
The Alumni Horae for Spring 1944 reported: “The
one event of this Winter Term which merits the word ‘unprecedented’
is that 19 boys were graduated at mid-year in order to enter
the armed forces of the country. Boswell, Damon, Donaldson,
Flanders, Hatfield, Hickox, Hughson, McLanahan, O’Connor,
Orbison, Otis, Pratt, Reath, Sheets, Shiverick, Stafford,
Stewart, Trowbridge, and Vickers – these boys, being
the older members of the Form of 1944, accelerated their course
by going to summer school and were eligible for the School
diploma. Their graduation ceremony was a simple and moving
one at which Mr. Schley and Bishop Dallas were present to
bestow the diplomas and Bibles, and Major General Sherman
Miles of the First Service Command made an excellent address…”
In the Rector’s Letter for Spring 1945,
Mr. Nash wrote: “The record of the alumni in the Armed
Forces continues to bring us both pride and sorrow. The growing
list of promotions, citations, and decorations amply attests
the loyalty, capacity and courage of the men of St. Paul’s,
and we elders are very proud of them. The Roll of Honor lengthens
fast, and each week now brings its new burden of sorrow and
of loss. We who stay at home send to you in the field our
word of gratitude and hope, and we wish you godspeed in your
service. May it be crowned by speedy victory and your safe
return, and by a peace which is durable because it is just.”
