Sheldon Library

Sheldon Library, begun in 1900 and dedicated on June 6, 1901, was the gift of the children of William C. Sheldon, a trustee from 1877 to 1896, in his memory. The building was designed by Ernest Flagg and was placed by the edge of the pond at the site of the Miller’s Cottage. The building was of granite with roofs of red Spanish tile. The interior arrangement featured a high-ceilinged central chamber with reading rooms on either side and stacks in the rear. From niches under the high dome of the main reading room the busts of classic authors looked down. Sheldon would continue to serve as the School’s library for the next ninety years, until the move to Ohrstrom Library in 1991.
