| The
Olmsted Report 1898
While the building of the New Chapel was the
major building project of the 1880s, during the 1890s a wave
of long-delayed construction projects were completed. Joseph
Coit was responsible for a major enlargement of the Big Study;
a complete reconstruction of the Old Lower School, renamed
“Middle”; and the Whitney Annex joined to the
Old Gymnasium by Lower School Pond. Also, several new buildings
were erected in this era: Alumni House, Sheldon Library, and
the New Upper School. This wave of construction led the School
to seek advice on an overall master plan from the firm of
Olmsted Brothers, founded by Frederick Law Olmsted, designer
of Central Park in New York. The Olmsted Report of 1898 stands
as a major school document in that it offered advice on how
new construction was to be situated within the School so as
to grow and develop according to a master plan.
