| Secret
Societies
Another sign of the times was the growth within
the school of secret societies, patterned on those existing
on many college campuses and especially at Yale. In the last
years of Henry Coit’s administration, when his grasp
on the details of school life was loosened, two rival societies
known as the “Hoi” and the “Bogi”
were established to capture for their respective memberships
the chief athletes and officeholders of the school. At first
entirely secret, these societies met in the fields and woods
around the school. A report that the Rector had got wind of
these activities caused their hasty suspension. However, the
secret societies continued in their clandestine activities
and eventually grew in power and influence within the School
at the turn of the century. Pictured above is one of the two
secret societies in 1902 being photographed in the woods around
the School.
