Football 1890

A club football game in progress at the Lower Grounds circa 1890. In the early years of football at the school the game was played without helmets. In Pier’s history of St. Paul’s there is mention of the first Rector’s lack of understanding of games. On one of his rare visits to the Lower Grounds, Dr. Coit tried to stop a football game in progress as being too brutal. He strode onto the field, cane aloft, and said: “No more of this!” ordering Mr. Dole, the referee, to stop the game. Mr. Dole explained that though the play was rough, no foul had been committed and there was no reason to cancel the game. Dr. Coit accepted the explanation in silence and left the field in his carriage.
