Board 1877
Owen Wister, who attended St. Paul’s from
1873-1878, is seen seated on the left in this photo of the
Horae Board in 1877. Inspired by his teacher Hall Harrison,
Wister became an enthusiastic supporter of the Library. He
wrote to his grandmother, the well-known actress Fanny Kemble,
asking her to send books for the newly organized library.
“Knowing my taste for literature,” wrote young
Owen, “the President has made me a librarian.”
Along with the Library, the Horae Scholasticae became
a major concern of Wister’s. Here his first literary
efforts were published, and he was the editor of this School
publication in his final two years at SPS. Wister went on
to become a prolific author, best known for his popular western
novel, The Virginian.
