Carter Knox
James Carter Knox, who had attended the School
from 1862-67, returned to it as a Master from 1868-1929. The
traits and abilities which he had shown as a boy made him
in his maturity a most valuable master. Although English was
the subject that he taught, and taught well, he was capable
at a moment’s notice of taking the most advanced classes
in Latin or French. His chief work in the school was in music.
During the half century that he was a member of the faculty,
he was organist and choir master, and won the devoted affection
of all the students who worked under him in the Chapel. He
set many hymns and chants to music and composed the music
for the anthem, “O Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem.”
