Halcyon & Shattuck Crews on water 1886

Rowing was indulged in, in the early days, but a decided interest arose in 1871, when the present clubs, Shattuck (named in honor of the Founder) and Halcyon were founded. In the latter part of May 1871, a notice appeared on the School bulletin board: “The Shattuck Boat Club hereby challenges the Halcyon Boat Club to row a race against time, in the Ariel, on Long Pond…The race is to come off on Wednesday, June 7, 1871 at 3 p.m.” This was the first Race Day in the School’s history.
